This course explores the principles of a total communication environment and promotes ways in which we can facilitate use of an AAC system - paper based or electronic - for functional communication in the classroom.
Course aim
This Developing Level course provides an overview of ways in which we can facilitate functional use of AAC in the classroom to participate in curriculum .
You will learn
To understand what is meant by a "total communication" environment and different forms of AAC.
To be able to describe the use of AAC for a range of communication functions.
To understand the importance of your role as a communication partner in teaching the implementation of AAC.
To identify 3 practical techniques to support the implementation of AAC in the classroom.
IPAACKS competencies
This course will support the development of skills for implementation & facilitating learning.
Session outline
Session 1: Establishes a baseline of knowledge around AAC and recognised implementation strategies that might be useful in the classroom.
Session 2: Considers specific teaching strategies and resources that may be helpful for promoting functional use.
Course includes
2 teacher supported online webinars.
3 months access to additional learning content within our Moodle learning management system.
Suitable for
Teaching staff and therapists who support pupils to use their AAC systems throughout the school day.
