Access and Control of Technology Accredited Module
Description
Ace Centre Learning is pleased to introduce a new Accredited Module Access and Control of Assistive Technology. This enhanced level learning module is now accredited through the University of Dundee at 30 credits (SCQF).
This Module is next scheduled to run in April 2027.
The course is taught over 10 sessions, each 3 hours in length. Teaching is online via Teams.
The first session will be on Monday 5th April 2027 (13:00-16:00)
There will be a session every Monday (excluding Bank Holidays) with the final taught session being on Monday 21st June.
Assessment is 100% from coursework (2 x 5000 word assignments).
(hand in dates for the next cohort will be 14th May 2027 and 2nd July 2027)
The Module can be combined with an additional 30 credits from another module (The Assistive Technology for Complex Communication, Physical & Learning Needs) to gain the PGCert Specialist Assistive Technology, awarded by University of Dundee.
It is also possible to progress to the MSc in Educational Assistive Technology. The MSc EduAT is a 180 credit Master of Science degree, inclusive of 40 elective credits. The MSc EduAT team plan (subject to internal approval) to make the Access module available as an elective within the MSc EduAT.
Course aims:
To be reflective and skilled practitioners regarding access and control of Assistive Technology who are able to adopt an evidence-informed approach to best meet the needs of individuals with complex communication, physical and learning difficulties.
To classify different methods of access and recognise the physical and cognitive demands of each for identified tasks.
To be aware of methods for evaluating a person’s achievement with Assistive Technology.
Course content

Knowledge of methods and resources that provide alternative access and control of technology
- Classification of skills required to use touch, mouse, keyboard, switch, voice, eye control of technology
- The assessment process for identifying alternative access and control of technology, and roles that support it
- Principles of Universal Design
- Ways to support skill progression or make modifications to enable achievement of personal goals
- Personalisation of AT solutions
- Legislation and regulatory frameworks relating to assistive technology provision or practice.
Suitable for: Health & Education professionals working with children & adults who use Assistive Technology.
