PODD 1-Day Alternative Access

This one‑day workshop develops participants’ theoretical understanding and practical skills in supporting communication using Alternative Access PODD methods for individuals who cannot use direct pointing.

Description

Many PODD communication books are designed to support autonomous communication for individuals who are able to directly point to symbols. However, direct pointing is not a prerequisite for using a PODD.

When direct access is not possible, an Alternative Access PODD can be used. This approach enables effective communication through a range of access methods. In the 1‑Day Alternative Access PODD Workshop, participants will develop both theoretical understanding and practical skills in the use of eye‑pointing, partner‑assisted scanning, combination access, and coded access.

This workshop is intended for participants who wish to extend their PODD knowledge and deepen their understanding of how to support communication for individuals who require alternative access methods.

Prerequisite: Participants must have successfully completed the 2‑Day Introductory PODD Workshop prior to attending this course.

You will learn

Participants will be able to:

• Describe the different PODD design considerations/ options to accommodate for alternative access methods.

•Outline the considerations for selecting different access methods to suit individual requirements.

• Perform the partner operational procedures to use a range of alternate access methods.

• Discuss problem-solving methodologies for developing operational skills for individuals who have severe movement difficulties (e.g. developing accept/reject movements for scanning).
